The Art of the Burn

At Petrichor Candle Studio, we believe a candle is more than just light—it is a transformation. Our vessel-free sculptures are designed to evolve as they melt, turning from architectural forms into fluid art. To preserve the cinematic soul of your sculpture and master the flame, follow this ritual.

The Ritual of the First Burn

  • The Foundation: Since our candles are vessel-free, always place your sculpture on a deep, heat-resistant tray or stone plate before lighting.

  • The Sculptural Shell: Unlike jar candles, do not feel obligated to melt the wax to the very edge.

  • Intentional Melting: Allowing a thin "wall" of wax to remain helps preserve the external detail of the sculpture (like the snakes of the Medusa) as the interior glows.

Wick Discipline

  • Precision Trimming: Before every light, trim your wick to 1/4 inch (for cotton) or 1/8 inch (for wood).

  • Controlled Flame: Short wicks prevent the flame from leaning, which ensures your sculpture melts vertically rather than breaching the side walls too early.

  • Debris Removal: Always remove wick trimmings or match heads from the wax pool to maintain the "Studio Intent" purity of your environment.

The Safety of the Reset

  • Surface Protection: Never burn a pillar directly on furniture. Wax will naturally drip and flow; treat your tray as the "vessel."

  • Time Limits: Limit burn sessions to 2 hours. This prevents the wax pool from becoming too deep and heavy, which could cause the structural walls of the sculpture to collapse.

  • The Final Act: Extinguish your candle when 1 inch of wax remains. This prevents the heat from damaging your display tray or the surface beneath.

Preservation

  • Light and Air: Store your sculptures in a cool, dry place.

  • Color Integrity: Direct sunlight can cause our Soy Pillar Wax to yellow or the hand-painted gold detailing to fade. Keep your art in the shade to maintain its "Sovereign" finish.
